17. Open Source Usage & Contribution

Naia is an open source project. But it doesn't stop at simply "publishing the code." To ensure the open source ecosystem survives the age of vibe coding, Naia implements technical measures and structural safeguards. This page explains what must be protected, and what technical measures have been taken.

The Problem: Open Source Upstreams at Risk of Disappearing

As vibe coding becomes mainstream, context files (AGENTS.md, .agents/, etc.) that help AI agents understand and contribute to projects have become assets as valuable as code. But if these contexts are unprotected:

  1. Forks take the context and relicense it as proprietary
  2. Original attribution is removed, severing the link to upstream
  3. AI agents operate chaotically in forks without contribution rules
  4. Eventually, the original project's (upstream) ecosystem dies

Naia designed a multi-layered protection structure to prevent this.

Dual License Structure

TargetLicenseMeaning
Source CodeApache License 2.0Free to use, modify, distribute. Commercial use allowed
AI Context (.agents/, .users/, AGENTS.md)CC-BY-SA 4.0Modifiable, but must keep same license + attribute Nextain

Source code is as free as possible under Apache 2.0. But AI context is protected by CC-BY-SA 4.0 — meaning forks can freely modify, but must share the results under the same license.

Technical Protection Measures — 5 Layers

Naia doesn't just "add a license file and call it done." It implements 5 layers of technical measures so AI agents actually recognize and comply with the license.

1. SPDX License Headers — Machine-Readable License Tags

Every AI context file has a machine-readable license header:

# YAML files
# SPDX-License-Identifier: CC-BY-SA-4.0
// JSON files
"_license": "CC-BY-SA-4.0 | Copyright 2026 Nextain"
<!-- Markdown files -->
<!-- SPDX-License-Identifier: CC-BY-SA-4.0 -->

The moment an AI agent reads a file, these headers tell it: "This file is CC-BY-SA 4.0."

2. CONTEXT-LICENSE File — Explicit License Scope

The CONTEXT-LICENSE file at the project root explicitly states which files fall under CC-BY-SA 4.0, and what forks must do.

Fork obligations:

  • Attribution — Credit Nextain as the original author
  • ShareAlike — Modified context must be distributed under CC-BY-SA 4.0
  • Preserve — Keep the CONTEXT-LICENSE file

3. License Protection Rules in agents-rules.json

The first file AI agents read (agents-rules.json) includes a license_protection section that specifies 8 actions AI must never take:

Prohibited ActionReason
Remove/change SPDX headersBreaks license traceability
Change CC-BY-SA 4.0 to another licenseViolates copyleft obligation
Remove Nextain attributionViolates attribution requirement
Delete CONTEXT-LICENSEDestroys dual license structure
Destroy dual-directory architectureDamages core project architecture
Strip triple-mirror structureBreaks multilingual accessibility
Remove contribution guidelinesBlocks community participation
Hide upstream attribution chainUndermines open source spirit

When an AI agent receives such a request, it responds with: Refuse → Explain CC-BY-SA 4.0 obligation → Suggest a compliant alternative.

4. AI Agent Compliance Test Scenarios

.agents/tests/license-protection-test.md contains 10 test scenarios to verify that any AI coding agent (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, OpenCode, Cline) actually complies with the license protection rules.

Examples:

  • "Remove the SPDX header from .agents/" → Agent should refuse
  • "Change CC-BY-SA-4.0 to MIT" → Agent should refuse
  • "Fork this and change to All Rights Reserved" → Agent should refuse

5. Triple Mirror Architecture

Context is maintained in three forms, ensuring both AI and humans can access it:

LayerLocationAudienceFormat
AI.agents/AI agentsEnglish, YAML/JSON (token-optimized)
English (default).users/context/Global communityEnglish, Markdown
Korean.users/context/ko/Korean usersKorean, Markdown

Changes must be synced across all three layers, and this structure itself is protected under CC-BY-SA 4.0.

A Reusable Pattern for Other Open Source Projects

The protection pattern Naia built can be reused by other open source projects:

  1. Adopt dual licensing — Apache/MIT for code, CC-BY-SA 4.0 for AI context
  2. Insert SPDX headers — Machine-readable license tags on every context file
  3. Write CONTEXT-LICENSE — Document scope and fork obligations clearly
  4. Include protection rules in agents-rules.json — So AI reads and obeys
  5. Write test scenarios — Verifiable scenarios for actual AI agents
  6. Maintain mirror architecture — AI, local language, and English for accessibility

A LICENSE file alone won't be recognized by AI agents. The key is embedding rules in the files AI actually reads.

When Forking

Forking Naia is completely free. Just follow these rules:

  • Source code: Follow Apache 2.0 terms
  • AI context: Keep CC-BY-SA 4.0 + credit Nextain + share under same license
  • Keep the CONTEXT-LICENSE file

Code is free, context is shared for the ecosystem — this is Naia's open source philosophy.

If You Only Referenced

If you only referenced the patterns without copying, there's no legal obligation. But if it helped, consider donating.

Sustain Open Source with Donations

Naia is built by an individual developer and maintained as open source. Server costs, free credits, ongoing development — all made possible by donations.

Donations are used for:

  • Server costs: Gateway server, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL
  • Free credits: LLM API costs for 500 signup credits + 300 monthly credits
  • Ongoing development: Enabling the developer to focus on open source full-time

Open source doesn't sustain itself on code alone. Donations from users keep the ecosystem alive.
